i am deciding on a motherboard. the epox 8k7a+ is on my shortlist but i have been told that it does not have an agp pro slot. is this a killer in regards to upgrades? how limited am i with video card selection? will i be able to use a standard geforce 2 card? also if i chose the abit kg7 will my 1.4 Ghz chip be compatible. abit's site only has athlon processors thru 1.33 listed.
AGP Pro is more 'future-proof' than AGP 4x. If you're next planned upgrade is a 'N-Force' board, then don't wory too much. If you plan to upgrade the G-card in say, 6-8months, then you may find that it's more advantageous to have an AGP Pro slot. If not, you'll be fine.
Try and go for a board that supports 'Palomino' though, as this is the next stage in AMDs roadmap.
To answer your question as to which boards use the "pro" slot now, only the expensive one, open GL professional Boards, such as the ATI Fire GL4 or the 3Dlabs Wildcat II 5110. These boards are over $1500 a peice, and it is not likely that you will ever buy one. From what it looks like, no Retail board will be using this port for at least a year, so if you are worried about the board not having one, I don't think that you need to worry.
I think the Soyo Dragon supports AGP Pro but I'm not sure if it supports Palimino. Another thing about the Dragon, I've noticed that a lot of people are buying it and are very happy with it at first. After a couple weeks of ownership, it seems people change their minds. For that reason, I was wondering about other boards that support AGP Pro. I definately want Palimino support... that's a must but I can probably do without the AGP Pro for now if Dragon is the only board under $250 that supports it.
