Put together an ECS K7VZA (with the nice tomshardware endoresement sticker on the box) with an AMD Duron 900, 300WPS yadda yadda yadda... it started up before, and after I took out and then replaced the HD to backup files onto another computer, it won't go into the IDE detection portion... totally hangs. I get the processor speed and mem detection.
I've tried resetting EVERYTHING, different jumper configs, and putting a magic spell on the thing, but nothing works... Is there something I'm missing?

Clear the CMOS. That's the only thing I can think of if all the physical connections and settings are good.

It didn't do anything to make it better. :(

Reseat everything and make sure all of you cables are plugged in correctly. Pull off all the cables and plug them back in as well.

Are you using either ATA100 or ATA66? If so are you using an 80 wire cable and not a 40 wire cable? Is the blue connector plugged into the motherboard? Is the HD set as a MASTER?

If it's a western digital drive then he'll need to set it to cable select.

Hey, I didn't know that. I'll have to remember that tidbit of information. Thanks.

Since your on that subject.

What the hell is cable select?

All the stuff I've ever heard has been "you probably won't need that" or "don't go there".

cable select lets the bios determine master/slave states. not sure if its determined by location on the cable or what though exactly.

Reply to mbetea

Cable select is determined by the position on the IDE cable, and both devices must support this mode. To increase confusion, the previous CS standard was the middle as master and the last as slave. Nowadays (I *think* from ATA33 onwards), the last device is set as master and the middle as slave.

It is easier to set them manually.

ATA66 at best... it's an older HD and stuff... but that shouldn't matter... before I took the HD out it read that the drives were there... I didn't change anything internally. I reset the mem and cables after the problem... I don't understand why it would just stop working like that.
I took the drive out to backup files on it before doing a reinstall. It wouldn't boot into windows before... but it would get to the splash screen... I'm gonna give it another go in a few... but weird... like crazy mobo or what?
