I'm about to purchase parts on line, that are going to be sent to the middle east for me to build a computer. My problem is that if there's a conflict between any of the parts, then I'm going to have a HELL of a time replacing parts. I'm going to order an Athlon 1.4 ghz (266 mhz), and I'm also buying Samsung (or maybe micron) 256mb DDRam (PC2100). My problem is finding a motherboard that is completely compatible with both of those. I'm considering the AK31 from Shuttle (spacewalker), which uses the VIA KT266 chipset (this is on AMD's recommended motherboard list). Does anybody know if I'm going to have trouble? and if so, does anyone recommend a different motherboard?
I don't know much bout the AK31 to advise you, but can only say that I have an A7M266 w/512 DDR PC2100, Antec 400 P/S, 2 SCSI Seagate Cheetah HDD's, Plextor SCSI 40x CD ROM, ATI Radeon 64 VIVO, Linksys Etherfast NIC, Diamond Monster MX-400 Sound Card, running on Win2k/Win98SE that runs flawless.
Of course if you go with the A7M266 you will only be able to use DDR, and it only has 2 DIMM slots, but is a very nice M/B using the AMD 761 chipset.
When you speak about compatibility you didn't mention what OS you will be running, but research the AMD website to see their recommended hardware, and the OS of choice's web site for the compatibility, then make a post here again with your full proposed setup and then someome can give you more intelligible comments on your selection. I hope this points you in the right direction.
thanx.
The reason I didn't specify an operating system is because usually I combine. Currently I have win2k server, win2k pro, and win me running each on a different partition. I would also like to test linux given the option.
The hard drive will be either a maxtor or a western digital, but either way we are talking about a 7200rpm, ata 100 drive. Probably nvidia 32mb svga (Riva TNT), Yamaha 32bit sound card (which I'm already using and think is GREAT!!)
By the thanx, and I will look into the A7M266. Although I don't even have a clue whether this is a chipset or a mobo model at this point. The question is did you have to update or even flash the bios?
Also, by the way yes you will need to get the latest BIOS for this M/B because it supports bootable CD ROM. however, that may be the case with any M/B manufacturer.
If you are considering Linux also, check there web site or other well know Linux advisory site for hardware compatibility then make your decision on hardware configuration.
