I just bought parts for a brand new computer. It's currently a intel d850gb P4 motherboard, 1.4ghz, IBM 7200 RPM desktar 40GB. Everything was working fine for a couple of weeks than I unplugged the ribbon cables from my hard drive in order to get to something on the motherboard but when I plugged the ribbon back in I started getting one of two errors. I either got an error of "boot failure-system halted" or "drive not ready" these messages happen right after the bios, when an OS should begin to load. I thought than maybe I killed the hard drive somehow (is that possible without even removing a single screw?) so I went and bought another IBM 40Gb the exact same hard drive and installed it in my system and everything was going great. Than a couple of days ago I unplugged the new IBM that I had bought and I began having the same problem all over again, the same errors after the bios. I than took both hard drives and stuck them in my brothers computers and they boot just fine. Now I'm questioning whether it's a motherboard problem or something. Please I need help!!!!!!!!!!!
There is a lot here to assume. Was the power completely off and no lights on on the M/B? Was the ribbon cable replugged in correctly (pin #1 - pin#1)? Not to insult your intelligence, but something doesn't sound right. First it worked fine, then you removed the ribbon cable?? Why did you do that?
Is your BIOS setup to auto-detect HDD? I need a little more information, not sure what to tell you other than to check the most obvious, such as, is every connector plugged correctly and securely.
What position on the cable are they?
Are you using the proper cable?
If it is an ata100 drive is the blue end of the cable on the motherboard? What are the hdd jumpers set to ?master, slave, cable select?
What is the difference between <font color=red>pink</font color=red>and <font color=purple>purple</font color=purple>? The <b>GRIP</b>!
