What would you advise to max this out from past/archive experiences?
Bios change? Y/N Would love to stick a AMD 550 in it or
your opinion on AMD KIII with the extra cashe?

Board = Asus SP97-V Socket 7 with 83MHtz ability

If memory serves, that board originally maxed out at 233 MHz. Often though there are undocumented multiplier settings that allow you to get higher settings. Also, the K6-2 series of chips has a neat little trick that takes the 2X multiplier and interprets it as 6X which allows you to get 500 MHz. If you do go with a K6-2 chip, you'll need to get the voltage down to 2.2 volts as well. Again, it's probably an undocumented jumper setting, but search the web and you'll find it.

Good luck.

That is a strange max on the website, because when I purchased the board from TC Computers it came with a AMD300. Will this AMD300 chip work for the application you stated? Where/how (search perameters) would I look for this info?
google? dogpile?; How would you set up this board as far as speed parts, with respect to a new board/cpu price as the determining factor. I should probably get almost all I can out of it as is.

Appreciatively

OK...in order to use the K6-2 500 you may need to get a "beta" BIOS in order to have the motherboard recognize the K6-2 chip. Unfortunately the "search" feature on the ASUS web site seems to be down, so I can't find their FTP site, but they have one and you need to check it for updated BIOS's. At the very least you need to flash the latest supported BIOS which is the 108 version available on their site. (I know I had to use a BETA BIOS on my Asus TX-97 to use the K6-2 chips)

Now for the lower voltage settings... Here was a post showing the undocumented jumper settings for lower core voltages.

http://groups.google.com/groups?q=SP97-V&hl=en&safe=off&rnum=3&selm=01bea68b$c82b52e0$16dafc9e@k6-2-400

Voltages
> For 2.2 or 2.4 Volts
> VD0 2,3 1,2
> VD1 1,2 2,3
> VD2 2,3 1,2

The Asus SP97-V manual is available for download from the Asus web site and it shows the following settings for 2.1 volts

Vid0 1-2
Vid1 2-3
Vid2 2-3

I would recommend getting a K6-2 500 and try the 2.1 volt setting. That's certainly safe since these settings are from Asus. If you feel brave, and need it, go ahead and try the poster's settings for 2.2 or 2.4 volts if you need it to stablize the processor. (NO GUARANTEES... I don't know this poster from Adam!)

Here are the other jumper settings for FSB and Multiplier.

http://www.asus.com/products/motherboard/pentium/sp97-v/sp97v-jumper.html

Remember, set the multiplier to 2X and the K6-2 will automatically interpret it as 6X. At 75 MHz. you will have 450 MHz. set it there and make sure you've got a stable system. Then go for the 83 MHz. bus speed and see if you can make the full 500 MHz. What comes into play here are your peripheral cards. Also, are you using the on-board 2D graphics? I'm not sure if that will take 83 MHz. You'll just have to try it. Remember, if you have problems, you can always fall back all the way to the 66 MHz. setting to troubleshoot then figure out how to get back up...

Good Luck.
