With XP I have the autoupdate feature activated. It connects to MS
www.au.download.windowsupdate.com.

Zonealarm Professional says svxhost.exe was trying to send my soc number to
the above website. WHY? I blocked it and I don't think my windows updated.

Virus more than likely. If you haven't got anti virus software on your pc
then i suggest you get one.

Two 'Free' anti virus application which i highly recommend are:

AVG Anti Virus (www.grisoft.com)

Avast! Anti Virus (www.avast.com)

Download either. You will need to register for a licence number but, as i
have said, they are totally free for home use.

Avast! automatically updates when you log onto the internet. AVG you need to
schedule an update, but this is easy to do

I have Norton AntiVirus 2004 which is I update. I ran that and I was clean.
Also ran "The Cleaner" which detects trojans - also clean.

I checked the ZoneAlarm Log and it says my soc number was attempting to be
sent to au.download.windowsupdate.com If it was a virus why wouldn't it send
the info to a different site. Say the site of the hacker.
Also I checked the windows update history log on my computer. It shows that
Service Pack 2 failed to complete. Since this ss# thing happened just as the
service pack was about to instal AND the ss# was attempting to be sent to MS
that makes me feel that it is something that MS requieres to validate me? I
do have a net passport that I made a while back but don't remember it they
asked for the SS#.

MS would never request a SS#.

Greg,
This time instead of letting autoupdate attempt to get Service Pak 2 I did
it manually. Same thing but slightly different website in MS as it was not
"au". This time I granted permission and the update took place!!
