KG7lite D3D problems

My system is :-
KG7 lite, 1.4 Tbird, 256 DDR
Sparkle Gforce2 GTS DDR (???), SB live
directx 8, win98se, via 4in1 version 4.32 (tried 4.29 also), AMD driver 4.08.
Not overclocked and overclocked settings tried.

I am having a problem in direct 3d with the AMD AGP driver.

I have tried all the GF2 drivers from 7 - 1470 and the result is always the same - it keeps crashing back to desktop in D3D apps.

3Dmark 2001 crashes on the hi-res second jeep run and counterstrike does the same. This only happens with the AMD driver installed - my system is rock solid without it, but obviously slow.

I have tried all combinations i.e. with/without the via drivers/AMD drivers it is ok till I use the AMD northbridge driver.

It seems the gf2 doesn't like the AMD driver or the other way round. I even installed my old voodoo 3.5 tv and although it didnt crash it was "choppy" when playing counterstrike online in D3D with 100fps and steady netgraph (50 ping). Opengl was ok as it was with the GF2.

I have even messed about with the AGP strength in the bios - changed it to DA and EA but no change. I also trid uping the voltages too. I can overclock to 1575 @ 150 fsb with GTS at 225 and 420 with no probs.

The only dodgy bit is that I only have a 235W power supply but i can't see this being the problem (my monitor has it's own supply - no other periferals connected) and everything else works ok.

I also reformatted the HD and did a full re-installed everything in the recommended order but no luck with just the video card installed and nothing else.

cant help much with your prob but that power supply is way to low for your specs (im running a enermax 430 in a similar machine)
btw how did you get your fsb to 150 mine stalls at 142
what mem ect are you running ????

would not be the pwer supply becuase the sys would crash completely. You will have to check with the sparkle site for issues.

Take Care.
What the heck was that all about!

Not necessarily. PSU problems can have very strange symptoms. I'd look at that first.

Aye my mates getting a tbird system when he comes back from his hols - dunno if i can wait that long though.

Then again why does D3D work without the AMD northbridge drivers but crashes when installed, surely this is not the power supply.

Here are some possible remedies for D3D apps dropping back to the the desktop.

http://www.geforcefaq.com/faq.cgi#hw:gef:troub:inst:lockup

Make sure a new PSU can sustain 20 amps on the +3.3volt line and 30 amps on the +5volt line. See http://www.geforcefaq.com for the excessive power demands of a Geforce256 on an Athlon system.

Also, the latest AMD AGP miniport driver is 4.80 not 4.08. Without the driver installed your video card operates at PCI speeds.

Would you like a Quarter Pounder?
No, thank you. Just give me the BIG heatsink. It's an Athlon.
Edited by phsstpok on 09/05/01 08:12 PM.

Sorry I meant version 4.8 and I think it is this that is the problem as I have said earlier everything works when this isn't installed.

Bought a new 400 watt power supply and it has made no difference.

I seem to have tried everything now, any one got any other ideas?
Oh, and powerstrip tells me IRQ 10 isn't shared and I have plugged my GF2 fan into the motherboard.

The only thing I can think of that you might have two AGP drivers loaded. Try uninstalling the AMD AGP driver and also the Via 4-in-1 driver. Start over and load the 4-in-1 drivers first but make sure not to load the Via AGP driver component (un-check it. You'll notice a note about Turbo mode). Afterwards load the AMD driver.

You might also try the Paul's Unofficial Abit KG7-RAID and KR7-RAID FAQ. Be aware that it is a work in progress drawing much information from Paul's Unofficial Abit KT7 FAQ. Both are very useful resources but the KG7/KR7 FAQ still has some references to older KT7 stuff which may not be valid.

I actually did that the fist time I put it all together but sussed it after reading paul's page. I have tried everything on there and most of the stuff on the gforcefaq.com-faq.cgi site.

I actually did a fresh install with just the video card installed and managed to get 3dmark 2001 to run all the way through............once. when I install the rest of the periferals and software it just crashes sooner rather than later.
