Seems like I was not the only one with a problem removing Linksys software. Thanks to the folks that replied and some troubleshooting on my own I now have my Linksys software back and running as it should be. XP SP2, Linksys WMP11.
It was a "sygate" firewall that was causing all my problems. I removed it and now all is well. This was, of course, after all the uninstalls the usual ways, the cleaning of the register of anything related to Linksys and going back to a previous restore point in time. This all helped me pinpoint the culprit.
Listening to this group sure helped in the diagnosis.

Y'all have a very merry holiday.
