I'm trying to find why one of my apps opens only when newly installed but
freezes after shutdown and reboot (it gets part-way through its opening
routine and then everything freezes solid - no cursor movement, CTL+ALT+DEL
is dead, clock in System Tray is stopped).

System File Checker takes several minutes to creep along the first half-inch
of the progress bar before asking for the Windows XP CD-ROM. With the disk
inserted, the Retry button does nothing, the More Information button
suggests two possible causes for the problem - neither of which applies in
this case - and the Cancel button dumps me back at the box that asks me to
insert the CD-ROM.

Task Manager shows that I'm running two copies of Windows File Protection
and won't End Task on either of them, and an attempt to End Task on System
File Checker itself produces a message to say that it can't do that because
it's waiting for an input from me...

NIGHTMARE TIME!!

Can anyone help?
TIA

I forgot to mention - I'm running XP Home Edition + SP2 on a 500MHz PIII
system with 512MB RAM. Security includes Zone Alarm, AVG anti-virus, Spybot
S&D, and Ad Aware, all kept up to date. All scans report that my system is
clean - and all my other apps seem to be normal...
