You mean the push-to-talk thing? It only works within the same
network. Yes, VZW has one or two phones that do that, but only within
the VZW network, and I think they require a business plan. At least,
the sign on the Mot V60p at my local VZW store said that it requires a
business contract for the PTT feature.

At the risk of seeming impertinent, what is preventing you from signing up
with Nextel?

He probably wants to talk to someone on a cellphone.

Yes, VZW offered, and may still be offering a "Push To Talk" aka "PTT" feature
on some V60p phones.

HOWEVER the IMPLEMENTATION of this feature on VZW is HORRIBLE!

To see how bad this is compared to others check:

http://kodiaknetworks.com/flash_demo/flash_demo.html

And I think I read where Motorola is purchasing or heavily investing in this
firm too! Wonder why!? ? ! It makes PTT on CDMA or AMPS analog available to any
cell operator and is as good if not better then Motorolas own iDEN format!

If PTT is what you need do:

1) Wait for VZW to get the same technology as Alltell's "touch to talk" (T2T)
same as PTT, technology from Kodiak. They were supposedly "retooling" the PTT
thing.

2) Get Alltels T2T phones.

3) Get either a Nextel or Boost (Nextel prepaid, not in all areas,
www.boostmobile.com )

If the people you want to talk to via PTT already have Nextel then you need to
get a Nextel or Boost as NONE of the PTT can internetwork PTT ie: nextel to/from
Alltell etc..

As good or better as iDEN doesn't matter, because iDEN is designed to be an
SMR-with-cellular-capability protocol, not a
Push-to-Talk-over-existing-cellular-transport protocol; what matters is if this
implementation is significantly better than Verizon's.

Bluegrass Cellular in KY (who just turned up a CDMA network) is using
the Kodiak solution as well.

VZW's VoIP solution is an utter joke compared to iDEN or Kodiak...SPCS
RL isn't much better but is at least somewhat tolerable.

I know this is a.c.verizon and not a.c.nextel but anyway...

FWIW, it looks like Boost will be more or less nationwide within 60
days...Boost is requesting phone numbers all over the place, Nextel is
soliciting dealers for Boost, and phones are starting to show up in
areas they haven't been available before.

I don't keep track of the Nextel groups, but I've noticed Boost Mobile
showing up in all the local major electronics/discount chain stores
here in Northeast Ohio (Cleveland/Akron/Canton)... this has been
within the past month or so.
