A friend is trying to run sfc /scannow after installing SP2 but gets an
error mesage that setup cannot proceed as the windows system on disk is
newer than that on the Windows XP CD SHould he use the SP 2 CD?

Hi Eric, you'll need to slipstream the SP2 update with the original WinXP CD thus
creating a new WinXP SP2 disk.
