I'm pretty busy, but I want to get components ordered for my brother.
Here's my starting idea, with a budget of $500
nFORCE2 EP-8RDA+ EPOX Retail $132
AMD XP 2000+ or 2100+ retail $91/$103
256MB DDR (not sure which brand or type)
56K Modem (old one died)
350W PSU+ (has a generic 300W)
Video (not sure which, but will fill in the budget with as much as I can get)
A couple case fans (any suggestions?)
Looking at Newegg for most of this stuff, save the memory and PSU which I'm not sure about yet.
Rest of the components I've got from his old system.
With the budget I've got, I want to get a NF2 board, in which EPOX is supposed to be pretty damn good. I doubt I'll overclock since I don't want to have to deal with any problems that might arise. I think a 2000+ or 2100+ will do fine with any videocard I might put in there.
Should I try it with the generic PSU first?
Memory? 2 128MB sticks? PC2100 or PC2700?
Whatever money is left would be nice for a Radeon 8500 as a minimum.
Ah I really want that board too... too bad I just bought the Epox 8K5A2+ instead when I destroyed my previous board by accident, I should have waited somewhat longer.
As for memory I don't know how much performance you want but since you aren't going to OC PC2100 or PC2700 RAM will do. PC2700 is ofcourse somewhat faster but you will bararly notice it with a 266MHz FSB CPU. Dual memory (2*128) will give a couple of % more speed too.
One or two casefans will probably do (find some cheap low noise ones): one in the lower front and one in the upper rear. If you buy a dual fan PSU you don't need the upper rear fan.
My PC eats so much money that I'm in 'desperate' need of it to buy PC3500 RAM, help Svol with his OC project!
--- PM me for information.
Buy A7N8X. It will support Barton. For saving money, buy the non-deluxe version

Buy a Tbred XP1700+ AIURA. Uber overclockable and cheaper.
256Mb PC2700 sambsung. or possibly 2 sticks for dualchannel operation if he can afford it.
Casefans? Thats me! The casefan guy!
I assume you will want fans not too loud. The best are the panaflow 2000rpm fans. VERY nice. If not them then the Enermax variable, vantec stealth, Pabst or sunon should suffice, though for noise considerations try to keep the fan speed below 2500rpm. (i.e. be careful which one you get as there are multiple speed grades)

Check Anandtech, they said the multiplier could be changed anytime.

I haven't recieved anything yet, but I'm pretty pissed off about the whole ordeal. First off, newegg was out of stock on the video and motherboard so I ordered it at mwave. I get an email today saying they don't have the motherboard (<font color=red>3</font color=red> days after I ordered it), so I now have placed an order at tcwo.com.
It cost me more in shipping than I liked.
I can't stand vendors who sell stock they don't own.
I'll update when I've got it all built.

eeek that ram will ruin your performance, you chould have gone for two sticks of pc3200 cas 2 but other than that it's a pretty tight system. I LOOOVE the motherboard wanna trade me for my epox 8k3a? lol
smurf A- I saw you leave with smurfette
smurf B- oh man as soon as we got out of the bar she started smurfing me
smurf A- shut the smurf up
smurf A- right in the smurfing pariking lot?
Well, I doubt it'll ruin anything, but I figured it was much more worthwile to invest in a good videocard. It's my brother's rig and he's going to use it almost exclusively for gaming. If he wants better memory I figure he can do that later.
Yeah, I just hope I get all the parts in time before I fly home. I really want to see how this thing runs and don't want to have to leave it in somebody else's hands to build. Newegg already shipped, but without the motherboard and video, it won't be much of a system to play with
I don't get what you mean.
nForce 2 is designed to run with DDR333 not DDR400. It OFFICIALLY supports DDR400, but as long as Athlons do not have a 200MHZ FSB, you are not using anything more, and the increase will be mere unless you have CAS 2 DDR400.

Also why would he need DDR400 if his FSB is then at 166MHZ?

Barely, if the RAM is not synched to the bus you're not gonna squeeze much. Supposedly DC helps only because it uses aggressive timings and not because it is twice more unused bandwidth.
Again PC3500 is NOT DDR400.

It is not making sense what you are saying!
In order for PC3500 to be standard, you need DDR433MHZ to be a standard, not gonna happen!
It's a way too small gap of bandwidth!
I still do not see why do you persist on calling DDR 400, PC3500.

Ok, I got this system up and running. Couple things to note:
That epox board is impossible to get. Everyone is out of stock. I ended up getting the Asus A7N8X and I'm happy with that.
Mwave took my order for the epox board and didn't let me know for 3 days that they didn't have it and weren't getting it in stock.
TCWO took my order for the epox board and never told me they didn't have it. I cancelled my entire order with them after calling them. They won't have the board for another month.
I bought the asus board locally and was very happy that way, although once again I had no problem with Newegg. If I'd have known that NOBODY was going to ship the epox board I would have bought the asus board with my newegg order. Would have saved me a lot of agravation.
The Radeon 9500 pro is awesome. Everything, everything, runs perfect at the highest settings. Only thing I don't like so far is the refresh rate seems to be too low and I haven't quite figured out how to set it higher. This 19" can handle up to 120Hz.
later...without reading the crashman thread, tell him congratulations and I hope it was a woman
Ironic, a couple of months ago you were all opposed to an ATi card for its drivers and outright claimed you wouldn't get one if it didn't support 99% of the games. Now suddenly you're all happy with it, almost like some orgy!
Oh well, gotta love the positive change of heart!
Congrats on the system, I am envious of your new gaming station!
Well of course, some are just plain lucky. I mean look at you, then look at flamethrower's horrid luck with ATi. It's good that some are forgiving, like DH, and gave ATi a second chance, *unlike some* ....
Dunno why u got him something so good.
If he were my Bro i would get him a craptacular second hand celleron system, tell him he is a little bastard and this is all he deserves then spend the remaining money on a R9700 pro for myself!!!

Well, it wasn't my system. I still feel that way about the drivers though. I wish I had more time to play with the card, but the only thing I played was Jedi Knight II and Medal of Honor. Both were sweet on his rig.
I might buy the card myself. I just don't want to have to deal with driver issues.
