A friend of mine installed XP and he put a password for the administrator account and now he doesn't remember it and it's the only account available...

is there a way he can reset the password?

I tried running XP while pressing F8 but it asks the password for every option I chose (like running a system restore)

well, there's a way using a bootable cd version of linux (knoppix) but it involves getting into the system files on the hd and changing that hash. It's not necessarily simple, but you might be able to find something on it if you have the time to look. (I know, not much help)
It won't even let you boot from the CD and reinstall?

You can download a Knoppix distro at Linuxiso.org.

Besides using a bootable Linux CD, you could always reinstall the OS, provided your data is backed up and you have all the software available. As for me, I prefer to use the bootable Linux CD.

You can also learn to remember to record the password in a safe place, incase you ferget agin! :)

And the sign says "You got to have a membership card to get inside" Huh
So I got me a pen and paper And I made up my own little sign

If you boot to the Windows XP cd, go into recovery console..

Nothing wrong with using Linux.. but probably a pain to go through downloading, creating the cd, blah blah..

I figure since Windows already has this feature, might as well use it.

There is another way of reseting the Admin password right from the recovery console.. but I just did a quick search.

You just need a win xp cd to do this too.
