Oblivion crashes

I purchased it the GOTY edition through Steam. I installed it, I got past the menu, past the character creation, and then at the start (in the jail cell) it will crash. It's nothing to do with Steam since I have tried installing the retail disc version.
I use Windows 7 x64
Phenom II X4 955 (3.2ghz)
Radeon HD 5770
Any help?

So you have two game versions? Steam's GOTY and retail version? And which one it crashed then? Steam or retail?

They both crash at the same spot.

Yes. Plus, this actually worked on this PC even when I had Windows 7, I had an nVidia 9800GT back then though.

Is the game that you installed patched?
Does the game recognises your GPU as 5770 (not Nvidia FX57xx series)?

the game works on Win7, so OS is not the issue.
I have the steam version and it runs with no issues, on a 7800GT and a 450 GTX.
Disable one of your monitors if you have duel monitors, remove any joysticks/gamepads,
try that.
