Which brings us to the subject of pre-ordering games. Looks like id Software made it so much more interesting this time. In a bad way.

This is real rage. Hopefully they will find a fix soon, or they're gonna lose some money. Guess they're not so happy now having developed that in OpenGL.

At this point you really shouldn't preorder any PC game. Apparently nobody does any beta testing anymore, or the developers just decide to let the players do the testing, and just patch everything at a later date. The PC port of RAGE is absolutely inexcusable. Yes, id chose to use an effectively dead API that doesn't have great driver support from AMD or nvidia outside of their workstation cards, but no full release game should require the use of Beta drivers in order to run properly. Even the Beta drivers don't seem to fix all these issues. The texture fill-in problems are also apparent on the PS3 version. Bethesda can blame drivers all they want, but the truth is, id just didn't care, and intended for everyone to play the XBox 360 version. All other versions of the game were made as an afterthought to make a little bit of extra money.

At the very least, id and Bethesda should have delayed the release of the PC version to ensure that the game runs properly on all hardware that meets the game's requirements, and not just a small selection of nvidia cards while using a Beta driver. If they can't do that, they should've just listed all the AMD cards as unsupported as of the game's launch so people who own them know not to buy the game, at least not until the issues have been ironed out.

I have no real interest in the game, but here's a list of issues from Hothardware.com:

http://hothardware.com/News/Rage-Debut-Marred-By-Performance-Issues-Dubious-Reviews/

Graphical issues (according to the Steam forums) include:

- No Custom settings for Video Cards
- No Console command Read here to enable the console key: http://forums.steampowered.com/forum….php?t=2154191 & via config file here http://forums.steampowered.com/forum…7&postcount=89
- No Vsync options – Results in screen tearing – Forcing Vsync causes the game to crash the drivers and game(AMD)
- Unable to skip intros??? To disable the intro videos put this “+set com_skipIntroVideo 1″ in the launch options of Rage Via Steam.
- Mouse acceleration?
- Can’t use Crossfire or SLI..
- Bad FoV for PC’s – Short-term solution: FOV adjustment howto
- Bugs:
Texture Streaming is bad and slow resulting in always reloading the same textures thus causing the textures popping in effect – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7Ch6TX-Cbs&hd=1
- Missing/blinking textures…
- Game crashes when exiting the Arc.
- LoD issues(popins dispersing items)
- Crashing after intro video
- Audio stuttering and not blending properly.
- Occasional Artifacts appearing- http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/9…0322215294.jpg
- Low Frame rates with occasional fps spikes
- Loading saves causes videocard drivers to crash…
- Game Fails to start with error code #51. (thanks to RockPaperShotgun for compiling this list)

It's just ridiculous, after all these years spent in the development of this game, all they could come up with was this?! Shame on them. And I am only saying that to keep it on a polite language level.

from the Gamespot review that I say this is a very poorly port from the console to the PC. This is very sad coming from a distinguishable company.
I was looking forward to it but after these reviews not play on getting it...and there is no way i'll be playing an FPS on a console...that is sacrilege!!!

Are you seriously claiming that OpenGL -- the near-universal cross-platform graphics API -- is 'effectively dead'?

As far as gaming on Windows goes, yes, it's more or less dead. Yes, it does still have relevance if you want your game to run on Mac or Linux, which is not the case with RAGE. Otherwise, it isn't used outside of certain workstation apps, thus the driver support for it is going to be horrible outside of workstation cards, and drivers written specifically for Mac or Linux.
