Speed: Processor vs HD

Hello,

I'm looking into purchasing a new (or refurb) laptop, maybe Dell. However, I have a question regarding laptops and what will give best performance.

There seem to be a couple of ways I can go. I can do a Pentium Mobile 715 (which is 1.50 GHz/2MB Cache/400MHz FSB) with a 5400 speed hard drive or a PM 730 (1.60GHz/533MHz FSB) with a 4200 speed hard drive. I realize the best would be the PM730 with the 5400 hard drive but if that config isn't available, which of the above two scenarios would give the best performance (and why - I like to learn as I go!).

Thanks in advance. I look forward to your replies.

Sincerely,
Rachel

The 4200rpm drive system will take a while to load stuff but will run it much faster when it gets there :)
Just add a 5400rpm hard drive to it after you get it, 2.5" drives have come way down in price.

It's not gonna be "much faster". You will NOT see the difference between 1.5 and 1.6Gz, but you WILL see the difference in HD rpms. I would get 1.5 and quicker HD if there will not be an option for an "upgrade" (spending more), but if you think you will be upgrading (spending more) than the question is moot.

The 1.5 is only 400fsb while the 1.6 is 533fsb. That should be a pretty decent difference. fsb makes much more difference than clock speed :)

They do not run in sink with memory anyway, that defeats most of the advantage. I seriously doubt you'll see the difference on two similar machines with those CPUs. I can hardly see the difference between P3 running at 733 and 1133 when doing basic tasks, let alone 100 MHz jump in 1.5 range.

my raptor beats all of my computers when loading webpages. (i see the difference)
It also boots in 28 seconds. (time when i press the power button to the time i can open programs in windows without delay))

3400+ 74g raptor beats
3.2ghz 4200 rpm(kinda long to load stuff)
900mhz 7200rpm
1.8ghz 7200rpm
