On Friday I picked up a Elitegroup K7S5A, now I was expecting a real performance boost, what with people likening SiS's chipset to the second coming, but everything seems to be running slower, 3DMArk2001 scores 500 points lower than with my A7V and a slower processor??? Anybody got any tips on tweaking this mobo for some decent performance??
SPECz:
New System:
K7S5A
Duron 750
128MB 2100 DDR
Sound Blaster Live Value
IBM 30Gig 7200rpm UDMA100 HDD
Gigabyte GeForce MX
Intel Pro100+ nic
3DMark 2001 - +/- 720
Old:
Asus A7V
Duron 600
256MB PC133 Cas3 memory
Sound Blaster Live Value
IBM 30Gig 7200rpm UDMA100 HDD
Gigabyte GeForce MX
Intel Pro100+ nic
3DMark - +/-1200
If you are running under win2000 you should add some extra memory. If you only have 128mb your computer will verry soon start swapping on de HD. This will result in a verry big perfomance hit.
I hope you have got those new parts for free, beceause if you only want a better score in 3Dmark2001 you should have got yourself an other graphiccard.

I bought a PCchips M830LMR board three weeks before. It cost only HK$490(US$60). I flashed it with the ECS's K7S5A o/c Bios(because they are same oem product).
I choose fsb 138/138 and my TB1.4G o/c to 1.45G and work great !!
With the TB1.4G cost HK$890 and a kingston PC2100 DDR 256m ram (HK$340), I spend only about HK$1700(US$220) to upgrade the PC to almost a most powerful machine.
Then I also trying to change the fsb to 150/150, it boot to a speed 1600MHz and work well in DOS mode but randomly rebooted from windows me.
Anyway, I will try to short all the L7 bridge and try again.
Why less Ram? Also, the k7s5a's performanced that you are hearing about is almost always aquired when using a 266 fsb t-bird, the performance increase when using a 2oo fsb chip will be negliable. Was this a clean install? do you have the latest bios and Agp drivers from SIS/ECS? What are your memory timings set to in your bios?
Thing is the 3DMark benchmark is from when I only had 128MB PC100 SDRAM, What I'm trying to figure out is why with a faster processor and DDR memory everything runs slower??? Its crazy!!!
And yes its a fresh install of Windows 98 SE and I'm running Detonator 14.61... I think ;-)
