Whenever I try to install something that utilizes the windows installation
service, the install crashes saying that my windows installation service may
be corrupt and I should reinstall it. Is there any way I can install the
most updated version of this without reinstalling windows entirely?

You have not mentioned which XP you are using.Home or Pro?
XP Pro has a installer in the installation CD.
