If I don't need a new phone at the moment (Audiovox 9500) and current
contract is OK, am I alright to just wait things out until we see what
happens with the Cingular/ATT merger before deciding on a new plan? Is
there an actual time frame attached to the "new every two," or can we re-up
after, say two and a half or three, and still get the phone deal? If we do
a new contract now, is there a consensus as to which would be the best phone
replacement for the 9500?

I signed a 1 year contract over 4 years ago. I'm still using the same phone
and have the same rates as when I signed up. As long as you pay the bill on
time, the likelihood of Verizon doing anything on their end is so close to
zero to not worry!!

People have indicated recently that NE2 expires 6 months after the contract
does.

Also, consider (actually, check carefully!) whether your bonuses, such as
free N/W, continue after your contract expires.

I was on month-to-month after my contract expired over a year ago and I
retained all my promotions, including free N/W. Verizon may contact
you to renew your contract, but you don't have to and really have no
incentive to renew unless you want a new promotion or a new phone.

Yes, but newer contracts than yours was may not do that.
