My wife and I have two (2) seperate $40/400min AC plans we activated 2
years ago at the same time. Our NE2 is coming up, and we would both like
new phones... I'm also considering (since I use more minutes than her), of
combining our plans to a family plan. Is there anything from stopping us
getting our two seperate NE2 phones, and then switching to a family plan
afterwards?
On the flip side, (I like having my cake and eating it) how about at the
end of our next 2 year contract, can we switch from a family plan back to
two seperate lines and get our NE2 again?

Yes. You can both take the NE2 to upgrade phones. You will both
have to sign up for another 2 yr. commitment. Then you can switch
to a family plan and add your wife's phone as the second line. Note
that your contract termination dates are independent. The additional
lines on a family plan are considered independent contracts under the
family plan "umbrella". The secondary lines are sort of $20 plans.

Well... half. The NE2 requires that you maintain a $40 plan for 2 years.
The primary line on a family share would meet that requirement. The
secondary lines are $20 plans and don't meet the requirement. So at
the end of another 2 years you could get the NE2 $100 on the primary
line. The secondary lines will still be eligible for the subsidized phone
prices the same as a new subscriber would be (you will have to extend
your contract for 1 or 2 more years depending on the subsidy you opt
for).

Just a note: After the 2 years on the family share you would have
to commit to another 2 years on the primary line to get the NE2.
The secondary line would have 3 options. Continue month-to-month
without taking advantage of a subsidized phone, upgrade at the 1 year
subsidized price and commit to 1 more year, or upgrade at the 2 year
price and commit to 2 more years. All 3 while keeping both lines
on the family share.
