I have been looking for an interface cable and software for my Audiovox
CDM9900 so that I could occasionally synchronize the phone's address book
and SMS listings with Outlook Express (or something similar) loaded on my
PC.

I see on the Verizon website that a software/cable kit is available for my
phone. Does anybody know if this kit will also facilitate adding a
different ring tone or two from my PC to the phone?

No, ringtones can only be added through GIN ($$$) or by emailing them to
yourself ($.25/message). See Howardforums for more information.

The method outlined in a thread on Howardforums appears to require the
phone's web browser AND of course, web access on my calling plan.

There are ways to get around the paid web access too.

Could you be a little less vague?

I don't want to violate any VZW policies. Search the HowardForums and you
will find what you want <G>.

I'm not the brightest bulb in the box about this phone stuff. Does the
workaround you're hinting at involve the phone's debug menu? Thanks for you
wee bit 'o help.

Check the Yahoo Group "Internet By CellPhone"

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/InternetByCellPhone/

Then go to the files section and grab the
"Verizon Connectivity Tutorial"

To download mp3 snippits for your ring tone,
- using audio program, snip the MP3 part of the file of interest,
convert to 16kHz, 16bits, mono to reduce the file size
- sign up for free on Verizons Pix Place web site (www.vzwpix.com)
This will link an email address to your phone. I know the
number@vtext.com will too, but this allows saving the attachments.
- change the extention of the file from MP3 to MID
- email the file to your vzwpix address.
- select save as sound under options when viewing the message.

I've also cropped or reduced photos to 320x240 and emailed as above to
save as backdrops or to store some photos I like to show. They are
much crisper than the ones from the phone's camera.

All of these do cost $.25/message I believe.
