My Dell laptop won't go into safe mode when I hit f8 at startup. My OS is XP
Home Edition and the Del is an Inspiron 2650.

Go to Start > Run and type: MSCONFIG , and hit enter.
Click on the BOOT.INI tab, place a check next to /SAFEBOOT,
click Apply and reboot.

1.Do you mean that the Safe Mode option is not available on the F8
screen?
2.Or do you mean it is there but fails to take you completely into Safe
Mode when you select it?

I had this problem (2.) and exhausted all repair suggestions and
attempts. Finally had to do a Repair Install.

Hi Carey:
If he has the second problem that I mentioned, checking /SAFEBOOT will
leave him in a Catch22.
He'll go around in circles since he can't complete going into Safe mode.
Let's hope that he has the 1st problem otherwise he'll need an XP CD
(Dell??) to do a Bootcfg /rebuild.
With no XP CD he then would need an MsDos boot floppy with editbini.exe
on it.
