Help and Support not operating after SP2

Since installing SP2 a month ago, Help arrives on the screen 3-4 min. after I
click it in Start. Then if I click Performance and Maintenance, it goes into
Not Responding. No access is possible on any subject. In addition, (this may
be related) Windows Update won't function from anywhere--my program or from
the web. In addtion, I tried to reinstall XP Pro, but since SP2 is in the
machine the CD is inoperable--or so the msg says.
