K-lite Mega Codec Pack and CCCP are the most popular codec packs, but they have been causing me problems in the past.
I personally use Satsuki Decoder Pack. It is the most stable one I found on the internet. http://yatoshi.com/en/index.php?p=decoder

Just download VLC. No need to download specific codec packs.

12 is way better than earlier versions but VLC can do thing like repair broken files that other players just cant do.

+1 for VLC!

VLC is the bomb-diggity of media players and pwns any other media player I have used to date, K-Lite is a close second.

For just codecs I use Shark007 Codec pack. You can download it from www.majorgeeks.com (I do not know the direct link off the top of my head and I feel lazy today lol)

Have not had a problem playing any sort of file.

VLC = FAIL imo

If you are trying to play HD movies/videos (who isnt?) VLC will typically not cut it. Its still not multithreaded.

CCCP + coreavc(if needed) + MPC or WMP or zoomplayer etc typically is your best bet in order to play all media files AND HD quality files.
