Here's a list of useful software.
I give several options because in most cases one piece of software can't do it all.
Please don't ask which one is better, because there's no definitive answer. Everybody has different systems, with different applications installed and also different needs.
But every one of these programs is FREE so you can try as many as you want.

ENJOY!

If you know a useful FREE program and want to share it please PM me with the name, link to download it and a brief description.

Also if a link is not working or a program is not free anymore let me know so I can fix it or remove it.

which of these spyware/adware scanners/removers do you use/suggest?? I have build a system for a client that is having problems with this (her son is a porn fanatic, and I had the pleasure of telling her). She needs something to get rid of the crap she already has on there. I will be able to install it, but she will have to maintain it, so if it is too technically challenging it will lose her. Let me know what you think fits.

Aren't we all?
Just kidding.

I've used AdAware and Spybot, both are good but you have to use both, because one finds/removes things that the other can't.
I don't think they're hard to use but I know we are a little better with computers than the average person.
A good firewall like Zone Alarm should be used also, that way he can be aware when some program is trying to access the Internet.

What I would do is make 2 partitions, do a clean install of windows in one, install firefox, make it the default browser, and set firefox privacy options so it erases cookies, history etc. as soon as you exit the browser. Install the firewall, antivirus, AdAware, Spybot, and any other applications you want for that client, including updates and drivers, and configure them so they're user friendly and the client doesn't have to mess around with them. Then make an image of this partition and place it on the other partition (hidden of course) or burn it in a DVD and place it inside the case. If they have a problem with it or the pr0n screws with windows, you can restore that image and you will not lose time installing everything again.
Just remember to tell them to not save anything they don't want to lose on the system partition.

I hope this helps.

I took a look at dBpowerAMP Music Converter, and it looks pretty cool, but there's one thing I didn't like. You have to pay to be able to save in mp3 format.
Since that format is the most popular for music, that means the program won't be free.

Damn, you're right. I have an older version that's 100% freeware. Looks like they changed the license for mp3 encoding with the newest version. That kinda sucks (I'm glad I saved the installer for the older version).

Firewall: its really bad that u didnt add Sygate there
i use Sygate more then 4 years, and all i can say is, there isnt any better one, i tryed all, but only sygate gives u the Software security that u need
note: there is a pro version to, but the normal one is free, and powerfull too.

Stinger isnt added, u can use it even as a antivirus chekcer too, i use it to scan me files that i Receive from MSN Messenger (u just need to configure MSN for that)

and a good PDF reader is FoxitReader :), really fast and stable

Reply to PlutoDelic

I was looking for the link to the sygate firewall but It no longer exists. Symantec bought Sygate.

If you have the link to the free version from Symantec please post it so I can add it to the sticky

Thanks

The old version of the firewall at OldVersion.com

A coupla my favorite (windows based) free apps:

Foxit Reader: great free, small, lightweight PDF reader.
avast! or AVG: antivirus
Audacity+LAME: audio editing

And a coupla boot tools

The Ultimate Boot CD: too much to list here, it has basically any tool you could ever need.
GParted LiveCD: friendly interface for playing around with disk partitions (just as good as Partition magic, but free and can do Linux/BSD/OS X filesystem partitions too!)
A Linux LiveCD: after spending a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the GUI of the one you've chosen, they provide a way to recover data from a system that will no longer boot (gotten lots of beer at college using this technique to help friends :) )

thats the worst place to go

I google all my downloads...

Anyone know of a free, good alternative to Outlook Express? I really hate the fact it loads MS Messenger when it starts up. I tried to kill MSM but then Outlook Express refuses to load.

Sorry if there is a link already. I ran a search on the topic but didn't see anything that was relevant.

you can use outlook which comes with office
or use mozilla's thunderbird

You can stop Messenger from loading with Outlook Express.

First, go to http://www.tacktech.com

Click on the "Articles" link, then scroll down and look for "Removing MSN Messenger from Windows XP".

Simply copy and paste the text into your Run box, and Windows Messenger 4.7 (NOT MSN Messenger) will be uninstalled and no longer load with Outlook Express (which really speeds up OE's load time). Now, the command line will not work unless you have Windows Messenger 4.7. If you have 4.6, you'll have to go to Windows Update first.

From there, you can download MSN Messenger 7.5 or Live Messenger and use it without having it load up with Outlook Express.

Sorry for the month delay.

Does gparted work with windows.
Is it safe to make a partition in a drive that has windows installed?
How would you do it?

Reply to dunklegend

CPUZ is awesome lil prog.

Reply to Suzuka

The GParted LiveCD is completely outside of Windows, it will work on any x86/AMD64/EMT64 machine (read: any normal PC) regardless of OS (it provides it's own, it's a bootdisk), just pop it into a bootable optical drive and reboot.

And yes, it is safe to repartition an already active Windows partition into smaller ones, this is what I primarily use it for (when friends want to try out Linux and already have Windows installed on their machine, I will use GParted to shrink their NTFS partition and make new partitions for Linux, this is only one example of what you can do with it)

As for how you do it, it's pretty darn easy but here is a good howto with screenshots. Basically, select the space on-disk you want to change (i.e. your full-disk NTFS partition), right-click, and select "Resize". You can then either drag the ends of the partition graphic or enter a specific size to shrink and hit "OK". This will free up space on the disk (only showing what will happen if you choose to apply the changes by hitting the "Apply" button) which you can now use to make new partitions in one of many flavors (FAT32, NTFS, Linux, BSD, etc.) Once you've finshed and are satisfied with the setup, hit "Apply" and let the disk do it's thing.

I can say I have tried almost every spyware and melware software and most have gave me a problem of some sort but I came across this uniblue software and if you have never tried it I do recommend it. I started with the registry booster. What a difference in performance after I ran the program it also defrags the registry, then i tried the spyware and it is absolutely the top guy for me now, then there is the speedupmypc take a look for yourself it is really a good program/s for spyware. http://www.liutilities.com/
