I receive this error everytime I reboot:

RED and blue SCREEN in a DOS environment

NAV Auto-Protect

"Unable to initilize the virus scanning engine database files."

OK

And when Windows boots I get the following message

EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 017f:bffc06af.

I cannot run any programs without booting into Safe Mode.

I have done the following all of which have failed me.

1) Restored the registry to an earlier date prior to the problems (This was
done by Windows automaticially after my PC started having the problems).
2) Reinstalled Windows98
3) Added this line to config.sys--device=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS /TESTMEM:ON
4) Renamed all .pwl files to .old extensions
5) Performed the following DOS commands from within the \windows folder in a
pure DOS boot
smartdrv
deltree history

All of which have failed me.

However I am using the msconfig.exe application and trying to get to the root
of this...

Any tips?
