Windows XP Tweak - fast prgm display

Jake_Barnes

Splendid
This tweak was posted a year or more ago & I can't find it ... so, let me ask it again. There is a reg edit that causes programs to display lightening fast when you go to start>Prgms ... normally, there is a small delay in displaying the prgm details, etc. This "timing" change in the registry causes the info to "fly" open. Anybody remember it?
(I reinstalling XP & prgm ... and have forgotten half or more of the tweaks and settings I've used in the past ... but don't want to use File & Setting Transfer Wiz ... I've got some issues I don't want to transfer ...)

PS - Anybody know a good site for tweaks, etc - now that Black Viper is down ...

This was it ... Regedit>My Computer\HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop ... MenuShowDelay>reset value of 400 to 0 ...

Found the thread <A HREF="http://forumz.tomshardware.com/software/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=42721#42721" target="_new">here</A>

Edit: Didn't seem to work as well as "pre SP2" ...

Update Edit: It does work! My registry cleaner had it locked down at a value of 400 (default) - I reset it to 0 ... now the menues just fly open ... for what it's worth ...

Sure, I'm doing a reinstall this week, and would really appreciate it ... btw, if you were partitioning an 80 gig master HDD, with "most" of the major/serious/OS dependent prgms on the primary partition, how would you partition it ... size wise, like 1st partition=20 gigs, 2nd partition=20 gigs, etc?

Thanks Mozz for the tweaks ... I've forgotten more tweaks than most people have used ...

That "menue show" tweak was locked by RegSeeker's "tweaks" section - once I reset it to 0 ... everything, menues and bookmarks, etc. just "fly's" open ... kind of like <A HREF="http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/8246/2katieholmestomcruise150x200c5.jpg" target="_new">Tom Cruise and what's her name's mouths</A> ...

My brother went to school with "what's her face" katie holmes before she moved on to private school.

I ran into her last year at a restaurant when she started to get known.. big talk since she grew up in my town..

that 400 to 0 works good. I wish someone would just throw together a huge package of tweaks.. just a program that does it for you.. something more extensive than TweakUI.

Black Viper had the single best web site for tweaks and everything windows ... and for some reason it's dead ... don't know if he got hacked, or just tired of it ... I really "counted" on his site - now, it's toast ...

Probably needs to reboot his windows server...

I heard about that site all the time.. and visited it a few times.. I think a program would be cool cause I work on so many computers that I don't want to go through and have to hack up the reg for each PC I want.. I'd rather have a program where I could import an XP Profile with the hacks I wanted.. that'd be nice.. might even be worth selling for 10-20 dollars a pop.

Heres a link to Black Vipers work <A HREF="http://web.archive.org/web/20041128084144/www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm" target="_new">BV</A>

Are you only using one HD? The reason that I ask is because I have been working with Raid 0,1 lately and love it. The Intel Matrix RAID will allow you to do this on 2 HDs. The RAID 1 gives you the mirror of the OS and that is what needs the protection in my system because of my overclocking. I tend to corrupt my OS installs at least 3 times a week but with the Matrix Raid setup one of the HD's will make it through.

If your using one HD, I would keep the OS partiion as small as possible. Having said that however keep in mind that you will need enough room on that partiion to run things like the defrag tool. It needs empty space in order to operate at its best. Is your case, I would have the defrag prog setup to run auto 3 times a week. That may sound like alot, but keeping the partition defraged will keep one in better condition. I would think 20G at the max, and maybe 15G if you never intended to add anything other than the OS to this partition.

I've already installed the OS (XP Pro SP2) once: I put only windows on the primary boot partition & everything else on others ... prgms on a 2nd (15 gigs) data/files on the 3rd & images (Acronis) on the rest ... didn't work well. The browsers (Firefox & Mozilla) kept deleting themselves or getting corrupted & required reinstalls ... the security/anti-virus-spyware apps wouldn't scan right ... I got tired of it and wiped the drive.

I've always had all my programs on the windows partition for simplicity sake ... yeah, I know I'd have to reinstall the main programs if I did a reinstall, but I was doing that anyway. I mean, how long does it take to install 10-15 prgms, a couple of hours a year ... besides, I'm putting Acronis True Image on so I can just take an image & just restore that ... problem solved.

I won't be doing raid right now ... don't want to bother with it (that's the next build project). And I may add a 2nd HDD as slave ... just for storage and images... that's about it ... nothing really complicated ... and no games - I don't do that.
