Slide show, filmstrip & thumbnail views no longer work in ..

Nothing happens when I select a folder of pictures and click on 'slide show'.
When I select Filmstrip or Thumbnail View the individual pictures in a
folder show only with their name and generic icon. Have to double click and
bring up Microsoft Photo Editor to actually the picture.
At roughly the same time this problem started, I discovered that an Excel
spreadsheet file I use constantly wouldn't open ..... no error message, just
nothing happens. When I select the file in Windows Explorer and right click
Properties: Under the General tab the file is identified as a Microsoft
Excel Worksheet ... but under a Version tab (which doesn't appear on other
Excel file properties) it shows File Version 6.0.2900.2180; Description:
Windows Picture & Fax Viewer; Internal Name: ShImgVw.dll.
Any ideas on what's happening and what to do?
