I have 3 options for CPU and gpu.

phenom x4 9850 / athlon ii x4 640 / phenom ii x4 955

gtx 550 ti / gtx 460 / gtx 560

I know that the third of each one is bet but I want to know if I could use the other cheaper ones to play current games on maximum settings for. If not then what settings could I play current games on.
how long will they last for future games playing on atleast medium setting.

Thank you in advance

GTX550Ti and the GTX460 are both good GFX cards. The GTX560 isn't as great, and an HD6870 would be a better choice. The GTX560Ti is great, though.

With regards to the CPU's, the Phenoms are the way to go. Even the older tech Phenom is a great CPU for today's games, and there's nothing wrong with it.

Basically - the Phenom x4 and the GTX550Ti/GTX460 is still very viable for today's games. Won't be able to max everything, but you'll get enough performance to play everything you want to at respectable settings.

if you did go for the gtx550ti and decided to buy another for sli then just to let you know i have a rig with 2 gtx550ti in and i play BF3 with everything on ultra but with motion blur and antiailising off and it runs superb

i wouldn't worry about physx. most games dont use it, preferring the much more versatile havoc engine. yes there are a few titles that use it specifically but not as many as you may think.
so dont discount ati for that reason.
the 955 and 560 would be a nice low-mid setup but i would consider it entry level so you can pretty much assume that you wont be able to max out the latest games. so with that in mind you will the best performance for your money. with both these parts.

Thank you but isn't 8gb a bit excessive. won't 4 do the job. I don't need Windows (already have it). not Sure I need a dcs drive because I have an external one. I think I'd like a mouse with 3200 dpi.

Ok so ive replaced ram with 4gb kit, deleted windows, replaced mouse with a 3600dpi logitech, and got a better graphics card GTX560ti, all in for £740. and at £14 i would keep the disc drive as its very handy to have.
