I have an Audiovox 5900, which I chose two years ago because it had
(reportedly) better reception than any other VZW phone, and talking
on the phone is wihtout a doubt my first priority. I also wanted a
spakerphone, and I got it. (I spend significant time on hold, and the
spakerphone is great for this.)
But I've become jealous of people who always have a camera around in
their phone for snapshots. So I'm wondering if VZW offers a phone
that will match my Audiovox 9500 is reception, still offer a
speakerphone, but also offer a camera, while still offering fallback
to analog mode. (I saw one phone on the web, which offered
"all-digital operation" as a "feature." That's a feature I don't
want!)
Thanks for any pointers.

To be very brief, you've just described the Audiovox CDM9900. But good luck
finding one (like I did) without paying retail. Very good reception,
Tri-mode, good camera, very good speaker phone. And you get an enormous
screen with terrific resolution and color pallet.

I picked the LG6100 over the Audiovox unit. The battery life seems to be
better and signal wise it seems to be fine.

According to PHONESCOOP.com the LG vx6100 has 3.0 hrs of talk time and 6.3
days standby . Same source shows the Audiovox CDM9900 at 3.3 hrs of talk
time and 15.8 days standby. Audiovox 9900 also has larger/better screen and
I can personally attest to the tri-mode reception being above average with
the 9900.

To each there own. I have and still operate a Audiovox 9500 under USCC and I
can't wait to get rid of the battery hog, even with the extended life
battery. Unless the 990 is that much different than the 9500, I prefer the
LG units.

Sorry brand new. The 9500 has always been and will always be a battery hog.
Even the people at USCC told me, of course after I bought the thing, that I
should always keep some kind of charger close by. Not the type of phone you
would want to be stuck out in the woods with for very long.

Reception and ability to make a phone call (I frequently use the phone
in margional recpetion areas) are my first priorities. With my 5900,
I've often been able to make a call when those with other phones
haven't - it was worth the investment. And I'm not willing to give up
the good reception.

Reception is my priority too because I travel southern California mountains
and deserts. I would NOT accept a digital only phone for that reason. The
last phone I had was quite good (Audiovox 9155) and this new CDM9900 is
following in that tradition and a bit FASTER on the uptake to switch between
analog and digital.

Tell ya what I'll do ... 'cuz I wanna know too. I'll leave my CDM9900 on
analog all night to see how the battery survives the night. Will post back

With analog phones, the radio receiver is always on, listening for a
call. With CDMA, when the phone registers with a system, the phone and
the system agree to a tiny window (a few milliseconds) at an agreed-upon
interval (2.56 seconds is common) where the phone will listen for a
"page" directed to it from the system indicating an incoming call. The
phone goes into deep standby between these windows, consuming very little
power. Other digital protocols, such as GSM, do something similar.

Sometimes too fast in my case. Mine will switch to analog in certain
spots ( I don't mean fringe areas) where there is digital coverage. I
am in the NYC area where coverage is all digital.

Ok Joel. My CDM9900 was on analog all night, starting off with a full
charge. At the moment (about 10 hrs later) one of the three battery charge
indicators is out. If in digital mode, I know that the battery indicator
would still show a fully charged battery.

PS: While it's safe to say that the battery charge indicator is about as
(in)accurate as any bar-type signal strength indicator, it took ONE hour and
10 minutes to return the battery to a fullly charged state using the A/C
recharger.

Some areas of NYC actually don't have a usable digital signal, due to
coverage holes. I've often wondered whether these dead spots are the
inevitable result of the many building in NYC (as the phone companies
argue) or just poor coverage on their part (as I suspect).

While I don't use my phone all that much, the "spots" I was referring
to do have digital coverage. One spot is a certain room in my house.
Although most of the time my Audiovox 9900 will stay in digital, at
various times it will switch to analog when there is ample digital
coverage. Some days it will stay in digital with two bars. This seems
about right. Other times it will switch to analog. I was always able
to make and receive calls with an all digital phone or my tri mode
Motorola V60i in these "spots."
I'm sure there are digital dead spots in NYC as you say but in my case
it seems like a peculiararity with the phone rather than a digital
dead spot

Moto v265.
Very nice sounding phone. Good analog. Very good speakerphone.
So-so to lousy camera.
Quite reasonably priced.

This sounds like "cell breathing," a shrinking of a particular cell's
effective coverage area as usage of the cell increases (thus raising the
noise floor).
