I need help, can anyone tell me how good is the biostar M7VIB for a xp 1700. The salesman at the local computer parts store says it supports the 1700. Says the 1700 is better version of the thunderbird. The discription on the box says it supports the athlon, duron. The board sells for $89. They have a MSI K7T 266 Pro2 for $119. Is this board any better and will I see the difference in performance. Thanks for all of the info you can give.

That Motherboard will supports the AMD XP1700; it uses the VIA KT266 chipset; however you really want to get one of the newer motherboards with the NEW KT266A chipset.
The new chipset has much more performance than the old KT266. I think you would be wasting the performance of the XP1700 on that old MB..
I just ordered the Asus A7V266-E KT266A-RAID-0 MB; with the AMD XP1700 and Crucial DDR ram to go with it.
I think most of the new KT266A MB are pretty good performers.
