I have a Moto V60s -- Verizon supplied, now 8 months old. The phone is
adult cared for and has not been abused in any way.
I am concerned that the phone is dying -- and I am seeking advice as to
whether or not anyone here has had similar problems, and what suggestions
people might have for dealing with this. I will be on the road in a couple
of weeks, and the Vz phone will be quite necessary for me. Unreliability
will be a significant problem.
Here's what has been happening, so you can get a picture of what concerns
me.
The charger supplied with the phone died a few months ago -- took it to the
local Verizon store, after checking it out, they gave me a brand new
charger. (At that time, some people here at this newsgroup suggested that
the original charger's problems might have been a weakness in its two prong
plug design -- and so, with the brand new replacement, I have been
especially careful to make sure the two prongs are not stressed in any way.)
I purchased a Moto brand high capacity battery a month after getting the
phone, and use that mostly. I rotate the original battery in for a week to
ten days every month or so. Whichever battery is not being used is kept in
the fridge. When I return it to the phone, I take it out of the fridge and
let it sit for a day at room temp -- I do all this to maximize the life of
the batteries.
About ten days ago, while being recharged, the high capacity battery
suddenly died. It was at about half capacity when it stopped taking the
charge, and it would not start the phone. I removed it (muttering bad
words, of course). I replaced it with the slim battery, and that took a
charge just fine. I tried the high capacity battery a day later, but it was
still dead, and would not take a charge. I called Moto, they agreed to
replace it, and I sent it back last week. While I await the arrival of a
new one (and that may take a while, Moto is out of stock on that), I am
using the slim battery -- which probably has no more than three months of
total use on it.
Yesterday, the slim battery suddenly seemed to die. The battery was a bit
more than half charged (showing two out of three battery charge bars) when I
turned the phone off. An hour later, I went to turn the phone on, and it
was dead -- the phone would not turn on. I remove the battery, checked the
contacts on phone and battery, replace the battery -- no go. (pause for
more muttered bad words, actually, more like shouted bad words this time
around). I plugged in the charger -- nothing happened at first. Then,
after a much longer than usual pause (there's a time lag between plugging in
the charger and the phone indicating it is being charged) -- it began to
charge. But the phone would not turn on immediately --- suggesting to me
that the battery had virtually no charge. When the phone would turn on (a
few minutes later), it seemed to indicate that the battery was very
discharged (no bars appearing in the little flashing battery symbol that
shows the battery is being charged). The battery has since fully charged,
and appears to be behaving itself as I write this.
This sequence of events concerns me -- does this mean the phone itself is on
its way out?. When the high capacity battery went, I chalked it up to "one
of those things" (i.e., a lemon). But now, with the slim battery and
charging process getting goofy, I am wondering if these events are signs
that the phone itself is beginning to die. It is still warrantied ('til
March). And I very much like its features -- esp. its analog and digital
capabilities, quite effective speaker phone component, and, with the high
capacity battery, decent usage time.
I called VZ tech support, and the young woman I described the problems to
indicated it sounded weird to her, too, and suggested I ought to take the
phone in to visit their techs.
Since the problem is intermittent, it might not demonstrate itself for the
techs at the Verizon store. Is the pattern of problems I am describing a
known V60s problem? If so, is that something I can explain to them so that
they would be willing to replace my phone? I really rather not find out,
when I am on the road, that I have to replace the phone (and have to track
down a Verizon store, and negotiate with them, etc.)

Why are you keeping the battery that's not in use in the 'fridge' ??? I
really think that you're doing more harm than good by doing that and that is
probably why both of your batteries seem to be dying...

Its an old wive's tale that if you keep batteries in the fridge that
they'd keep better. I've heard that it makes no difference either way.
