Is defrag suppose to work very slow or do I have a problem. First off I had
to find defrag in the system tools because typing "defrag" into the run box
did nothing - can that be fixed? My machine is a 1.8 ghz running XP pro. It
has been on defrag for over an hour and only 2% is completed - first it did a
"analyze" then a "compress" and now a "defrag". The hard drive is 80 gigs -
at this rate it will take a day or so. Can anyone offer suggestions as to
what is going on?

The length of time is takes to defragment a hard disk varies with the amount
of data on the disk and how badly fragmented that data is. Here are two
other things to keep in mind:
In order for disk defragmenter to work efficiently you need to have at least
15% free space on your hard disk. If you're very close to that amount,
defragmenting will be very slow.
Close all open applications before defragmenting. Any disc writes will cause
disk defragmenter to start all over. Some people like to defragment in Safe
Mode.
The command for disk defragmenter is dfrg.msc.
