Performance Issues - CPU Usage Staying At 100%

I have Windows XP Pro installed on a relatively new IBM ThinkPad T41 with 768
Meg of RAM.

My performance issues started when I installed Norton Anto Virus 2005 on my
laptop. I have since taken it off and replaced it with AVG. My performance
is better than it was with Norton 2005 running but worse than it was before I
installed Norton 2005.

If I go into the task manager I see that the run32dll.exe is taking up about
96 to 98% of my CPU utilization.

Any ideas as to what I am going to need to do in order to improve my laptops
performance? I sure hope it is not going to be to reformat my hard drive and
reload all of my applications.

Thanks.

You might receive such an error if the run32dll.exe file is corrupt
or if a virus (e.g. W32/SirCam@MM is present on your machine).
To correct the error, begin by ensuring that you have an up-to-date
virus program and perform a full scan of your system. Next, to restore
run32dll.exe, insert your Windows XP installation CD-ROM, then
go to a command prompt and type:
expand <CD-ROM:>\i386\rundll32.ex_ %Systemroot%\rundll32.exe
to extract the version of the file to your system. After you extract the file,
restart your machine.

Hi Carey,

I ran a complete virus scan and did not find anything.

I restored the rundll32.exe as you suggested and I will reboot and see what
happens. Thanks.

Rick

A thought. When run32dll.exe is running list the applications in the
Applications tab. Then End Task run32dll.exe and see which application
is no longer listed.

Hope this helps.

Gerry,

It seems like I have been getting this error with different programs running.

I will try your suggestion of restoring the rundll32.exe file from cd does
not take care of the problem.

I really think that the cause of this had something to do with upgrading
from Norton 2003 which came pre-installed on my ThinkPad to Norton 2005. Now
both of them are off the machine and I am using AVG.

Thanks.

Antivirus programs will not reliably detect or prevent Spyware from
getting onto your computer.

Go to http://aumha.org/a/noads.htm and see if that reports anything
amiss with your machine. If it does then follow the suggested steps
for removal and/or use the Spyware Quick Fix procedure at
http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm

Good luck

Ron,

I tried your suggestion and it did not find any spyware. I run something
called Ad Aware on a regular basis.

Thanks.

I had a user with this problem and just deleted the file in Safe Mode. The
notebook was unusable and deleting the file caused no problems. I now see
that this can cause a problem. You may want to rename it and see if it
causes a problem.

Or:

The 1.37a update for IBM Thinkpad T41(and others) is supposed to solve the
issue.

Go here:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-44226

Click on:

1xu104u1.exe

Then Agree to the agreement.
