About 2 seconds after I open Windows Media Player, the CPU usage in Task Manager shoots all the way up to 99%. Does anyone know how to remedy this??

He has a point..

Does it maintain 99% for extended periods? Normally when opening a program, CPU will jump high then drop quickly.

Chances are it's out searching for updates or indexing your system looking for changed media files. Check the preferences of Media Player and disable it's ability to scan your computer.

I also think that it's scanning your PC.
What do you want to do with media player?
There are good alternatives for everything that media player does.
