I built a new comp every thing was fine i put win xp in it and every thing i uodated all the files. Then a week later the system kept rebooting it self so i tryed running it under safe mode it let me for like 3 min then it shut down. i ran a diagnostic on the hard drive and it said to replace it so i bought a new maxtor sata 100gb hard drive but now i can not install win xp. i cant format the hard drive using the winxp because each time it comes up with a messege saying please make sure your drive is installed correctly. I looked under the bios to see if the drive is there and it is so i have know idea what is going on.

Sata cables are somewhat sensitive meaning you can't bend them hard. Try a different SATA cable. Make sure your SATA in bios isn't disabled.
Make sure you're using SATA1, if that doesn't work, try Sata2.

You might want to try disabling IDE devices so it only sees SATA devices too.. at least my mobo will allow that feature.
