I've been told that the greater the size of the My Documents folder, the
longer XP takes to load, and, in some cases, the wores the overall
performance.
Can anyone tell me more? I realize that the My Documents folder is part of a
user's profile, but didn't realize that it's size could affect performance.

No.

The information is provided "as is", it is suggested you research for
yourself before you take any advice - you are the one ultimately
responsible for your actions/problems/solutions. Know what you are
getting into before you jump in with both feet.

It's not the size of My Documents, it is the number of files dumped into
the root folder of My Documents. No version of Windows is good at
handling thousands or tens of thousands of documents at the same level
in a folder. (Win9x was considerably worse in this respect than Win2K/XP.)

It's a "Shlemiel the painter" thing -

The issue which may have applied with Windows 98 does not exist with
Windows XP.
