Hello, recently my power supply blown up (really don't know why but it was kind of funny) so I decided to take the chance to update my PC (specs below). I managed to gather 800 Euro (not much but it is all I have), I looked around for good parts (quality is a big thing for me) in magazines, web sites, etc and decided to get an Antec PLUS1080AMG box, an Asus P4PE (with all extras) motherboard, Intel P4 2.4 FSB 533, and generic 512MB DDR333 RAM (probably not a wise choice but here (Portugal) brand ram is more myth them reality) and re-use my old computer parts.
But my problem is that I'm out of touch with the hardware world, I don't know if I'm making the right choices so I'm asking for advise, hope to see some replies.

PS: By the way do you know if the motherboard has plugs to connect the case front usb/firewire ports?

I know that in the USA, on a budget of $800/800 Euro you would be much better off buying an AMD system. Do you have any friends or family in North America? You could get your money to go a lot farther most likely.

As for hardware, if you go with AMD you will have enough money to build a proper system. You should buy a new harddrive for example since yours might actually be a 5400 RPM drive. Look at the new Western Digital JB (special edition) series with 8MB of cache. They don't put ISA slots on motherboards anymore and I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that your modem is an ISA modem. You'll want to buy a new PCI one. If you're gaming, you should probably focus a lot on the video card. The newest cards I've had experience with are the Nvidia GeForce4 4200 64MB and that didn't impress me. It pretty much gave me no performance boost compared to my overclocked GF2 Pro. The other card was a ATI Radeon 9500 Pro and that was pretty impressive. Definitely go with 512MB of memory. I went from 512MB to 256MB back to 512MB today when I got my replacement stick of memory, and it sure is nice. I would stay away from generic memory. I think you're asking for trouble if you stick that in the system.

first of all thanks for your post :). i must say my first choise has AMD but since Intel released those HT CPU's I decided for Intel instead so i could update later wen P4 w/ HT prices went down. about buying in the USA it's impossible i have no famely there and i think the voltage are diferent Portugal 230v USA 130v but i maybe wrong, as for the other stuff modem is PCI but, as soon i get ADSL in my house it's going byebye, grafic board i'm not interestead in changing maybe the next generation afther GeForceFX, i know i need a new hard-drive but due to the small buget i has thinking in doing it later, finaly about the ram i could try to get some brand ram but 1º it should be extreamely dificult (no shop around here sells it maybe ordering) and 2º i don't know witch are the best brands.

Crucial and Corsair are the most common-known brands.
You also have Kingston, Dane-Elec, Mushkin and OCZ.

My dual-PSU PC is so powerfull that the neighbourhood dimms when I turn it on
