It's a Core i7 920 system and I have the new copy of Vista in hand. Should I just install Vista and then upgrade to Windows 7 in a few days or would life be easier if I just wait for Windows 7?

better install some free os like ubuntu for a few days and manage... i'd wait till 22 and directly install 7... than screw up my system with vista :)

Install Vista now, you are not going to accumulate a lot of garbage in that short time, and you will need Vista for the upgrade anyway, so it may as well be installed.
This will give you a chance to make sure your system is working as it should before the upgrade.

If you need that your PC start to work immediately, install vista and after, make a clean installation of win 7.
