I have an EPOX 8KHA+ and want to tune the BIOS for best, non-overclocked spped.
I read Tom's guide on the various BIOS settings, but how do I determine what the appropriate settings are relative to my specific ram memory, hard disk, video card, etc?
Is there some software that can scan my components and make suggestions for the best BIOS settings?
The best things to do is trying 1 setting at a time on your system and see what works best for you. Usually, if you tend to use benchmarking utilities it is just for bragging rights or to keep up with the Jones.

Yes, yes you do have a point.
Many ajustments to bios give minimal differences.
One exception would be the DD. For socket 7 the default is no LBA mode, no 32 bit transfer mode(beware of win 3.1), that makes a difference. Some bioses default to "dissable" for L2 cache = not good and also if the PIO setting is on auto the sys queurries the drives to see what PIO setting they will accept, so if you set the value yourself you save booting time.
By saying "my specialty is", does not necessarely infer that i am a "specialist". That, i am not. I am however an "enthusiast"

Holy [-peep-] that is heavy.
There is also a Pyrenes (hound or something) that is apparently huge.
I have had 2 huskys.
The last was 13 3/4 (last winter) when she departed, still feel it, good god that is hard.
Don't want anymore too hard when they go. :-((

You are a wise one you are. [happy]
If fact my interspecies friend that i now communicate with is, and some will scoof at me but you know it,s ok, is a 34 inch commond garter snake. We rescued it last summer from a bunch of kids whose parents are a little ingnorant to put it nicely. These kids caught it in the cullie and said they might kill it. My girls came to me with the story crying. Well, go see the little boys and offer them 10 bucks for the snake. Voila, one saved creature from the hands of innocence. She(not sure if she is a she) is with us since and we are all attached to that strange creature.
God i love to write......
Any other animals friends ?
Wow, bios tuning where have you gone now ?

I know some of the default settings were way too conservative. For example, the BIOS had me using PIO to access an ATA/100 disk drive.
Anyway, here is my system:
Motherboard EPOX 8KHA+
Athlon XP 1900
TWO Micron PC2100 256MB (total of 512MB)
Hard disk WD 80GB 7200rpm ATA/100
Old Nvidia Geforce DDR 32MB card
Creative Audigy w/1394 port
Modem: Conexant Soft K56/14.4Fax Winmodem
Acer 20 x 10 x 40 CD R/W
Pioneer 16x DVD
Monitor: Hitachi CM751 19"
Windows XP Pro
I don't trust the VIA USB support, so I have a 4-port USB
PCI adapter (Lucent chip) with 500ma per port. Attached to
one of the ports is a 4-port DC powered USB Hub.
As an example of my confusion, I don't know the specs of the Micron ram, so I have no idea of the correct settings in BIOS for maximum performance.
This machine is very fast, so I have no desire to smoke it by trying to overclock it. But, if some of the default BIOS settings are significantly slowing it down (like using PIO instead of UDMA on the disk drive), I'd like to correct those.
Hey M,
Is there some benchmark, that you want to score high in? The safest thing to do is just set the bios to turbo or fastest and run the benchmark and see which setting is higher. I forgot to read all of your posts, but how high are your cpu & mobo tempertures? Oh yeah make sure your Memory is set to 4 bank interleave and CAS or CL to 2.0, yes, your Micron can handle it, but it is over-clocking your DDR. You might ask this same question in the Over-clocking forum, and get a little better response........but if you think your computer runs fast, you would be best off, not changing any settings. Good Luck!
Peace Out.............tile
WHAT????? I CAN'T HEAR YOU OVER THE ROAR OF MY CASE FANS! YOU'LL HAVE TO SCREAM!
Maybe you could, i am lacking in two areas.
Discipline.
Courrage.
BTW, wy not write a book for the simple reason of writting.
There is something so damn powerfull, i will go as far as to say "mystical", about the "word".
In the bible there is something about : "the first word" or "then God spoke the first word" or something in that nature. My bible readings are mostly of old testament, but that is from way back.
Well the speeling was ok, i think, so you are just jyving me. :-)
The THG " seti" projet might not get of the ground. :-(
The "book" projet was a good idea, but as many good ideas, lost in the wind my friend. :-(
That's:
2 = :-(
1 = :-)
We have catching up to do here...
I'm at a lost to know how to work this out.
But to get back to the real thing "seti" , so much energy, so many people involved, they cannot all be .
Hey, check this out(you might already have heard it however)
"deep in the lenghly calculation of the value 'pi', there could be found a sudden series of binairy values. These values would be in fact a code. A code to deciphere some of the most undecipherabel scientific problems human kind faces. This code is a natural occuring phenomena of the universe, built into a natural value as 'pi'. It had always been there, only waiting for the emergence of a species capable of deciphering it" !
Not the exact words to the letter but from: Carl Sagan "Contact".
God that was a good movie and book.
I wish to send my best wishes out in the memmory of a great man: CARL SAGAN
