I just purchased a motherboard and find it's not the "E" version cited in the subject line.

Should I be upset and return it for the E, or is there not that much difference?

yes you should return it asap!

the one you got has the KT266 chipset while the "E" version has the KT266<b>A</b> chipset. there is significant performance difference between the two.

Drifting a wee bit... What about the a7A266-E board? I'm not really trying to set any landspeed records, but did want the AMD XP cpu...

The difference in performance is great. The KT266A have a redesigned memory controller.
