What is the procedure for installing additional RAM? I have a Toshiba 1400
notebook with 256meg installed in slot B, slot A is empty. I have installed
the memory and the machine "beeps" upon power up but does not start.
Removing the extra RAM and the machine functions normally.

Thank you for answering my inquiry, I have spent some time on-line at the
Toshiba support site only to get more frustrated, I was hoping that someone
here could give me some instructions. Again, thanks!

You did the right thing, nothing else *should* be necessary.
But still, things can go wrong.
It might be the wrong memory. It might not be seated properly,
etc,etc.
Have you tried substitution? Take out the old and put the new
by itself.
