I had a 420W PSU that died on me and my only option was to get a new power supply... So I ordered a new one, a Vantec 520w Stealth, and I replaced the old one and the pc didnt turn on when I press the power button so I'm like OK, this sucks and I go take a seat and next thing you know, the power supply started smoking with a burning smell. What the hell is going on? Why is it every new power supply I put in ends up burnt out? Does the board have anything to do with this?

My PC Specs:

Thermaltake Xaser II A5000A Plus w/ 450W Power Supply, Asus P4S8X Gold Version SiS 648 P4 (533FSB) Skt478, Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 Processor (Northwood) 2.53GHz, 533MHz FSB, Socket 478, Corsair CMX512-2700C2 512MB DDR333 PC2700 XMS Memory w/Heat Spreader, Creative Labs Sound Card Audigy 2 Platinum, ATI All-In-Wonder 9700 PRO AGP 8X 128MB DDR Video Card, Plextor PlexWriter 48/24/48A, Sony DDU1621/DDU1612 DDU1611 16X IDE DVD, Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 6Y120L0 120GB Ultra ATA/133 7200RPM Hard Drive w/Fluid Dynamic Bearing Motors

Well the way i see it you have either amazingly bad and dirty mains power or (more likely) your motherboard is shot and has a serious flaw... cauzing your poor PSU to overload.

Are there any signs of physical damage to the board? (burn things, capacitors that have popped etc)

Well, a friend also told me that something has a short... I dont see any physical damages, is there anyway that I can find out where the short is located?

probably not.
it could be the board grounding itself on the case though.

actually its not grounding the case at all, i installed the board on risers, plus it was working fine for a good 5 months. but I did a test today... I plugged the psu to another motherboard (just the motherboard itself) and it worked fine... so then i plugged the psu to the asus p4s8x motherboard and it made the power supply hum a high pitch noise and it didnt power up at all. I did alot of reading and many people had the same problem with the p4s8x board because of the bios upgrades, the beta ones that is. Because it was giving my video card (ATI AIW Radeon 9700 pro) problems. This board is definately a piece of crap. I dont suggest anyone getting it. I'm sticking to intel boards from now on.
