XBOX 360 extra HDD

I recently bought an xbox and i hve an external HDD with 300gb. Is there a way to make it a fully 300gb xbox storage system and not a 16 gb? If not can anyone at least tell me the format a normal xbox hdd comes in? mine is currently fat 32 so it can be read, im trying to do this because 100 does not sounds reasonable for an xbox hdd while im having one around in my house.
