I figure this is a good place to get some input, so throw me your thoughts/knowledge, if you can.

I work in a company that is purchasing 3ghz Intel processors to upgrade our systems. I was putting in Antec TruePower 380's in there also, but we ran out. Our new shipment included cases with PowerMax 400w PSU's and we also got some of those by themselves (the PSU's).

Well, after deploying my first 3 systems, one of them started rebooting spontaneously, and so I disbled XP's reboot feature to try and get a better idea of the situation. It faithfully bluescreened an hour later and before I could get down there, it cut off. When I went to restart it, it wouldn't do anything at all. Upon testing it, the PSU was bad.

I was wondering right about then if we were going to have a problem with these PSU's, and so I decided to run my own little test. I loaded 3dMark on my PC (the new cases were nifty so I had to get one, and therefore had one such PSU), and ran it. It passed the video fine, and was on the second part of the CPU test when **POOF** it cut out. Once again, the PSU was dead.

My question is, do 3ghz processors have a special need above of the rest? Or is it strictly the cheap power supplies doing this?

I looked for info on this all day the other day and couldn't come up with any solid info.

Thanks for anything you guys can give me...

if you didnt overclock a 3ghz could possibly run off a 350wt psu. it also depends what graphics card your running and what pci cards, fans and drivers you've got.

400 watt will run anything as long as its not overclocked. cheap PSU's are argueably the worst componant to skimp on. next time buy a thermaltake or antec PSU. they are gaureenteed to last.

It's a problem of cheap power supplies. They are rated at peak instantenous load and probably have no overload protection.

If you need to keep the budget in check get the $36 Fortron 350W power supplies from http://www.newegg.com. They are the OEM supplier for Sparkle Power and Acer Power (under the Aopen brand), and have the best quality of any PC power supply manufacturer.

Heh heh. There's nothing like a crappy power supply. Trust me, I know. I've been down that road.

Actually I'm still down that road. I've got an old system that I'm not sure what to do to fix it. All that I know for certain is that the power supply isn't cutting it and that to fit the form factor of the case no better power supply exists. :\

If I'm lucky the mobo adheres to the microATX standard (you can never trust OEMs on that kind of stuff though) and I can replace the whole case and thus get a better power supply. If I'm unlucky I'll have to decide what components are needed the least and strip it down until it's stable again.

A 'special' need? No. Generally spealing every speed grade higher will require slightly more power than the last. It's a ramp effect that goes through the whole product line, not some 3GHz barrier.

Congradulations!

You have just discovered like so many others that 400W doesnt equal 400W.

If you look at the current ratings on the sticker on the side of the PSU you will probably see that the 400W 'cheapass' PSU can do alot less than the 380 antec!

Once i saw that a 300W quality PSU put out more juice than a 350W generic. Its that bad.
Plus low quality PSU's also have a habit of dying quicker and easier.

Go get yourself some quality power supplies.

WTF is that brand LOL.

Soundslike you got an ok one.
The problem with 'average' PSU's is that yoiu have no idea what you are getting.
If your lucky you get a half decent PSU that works.
If you are unlucky yet get a flimsy lightweight POS that dies in the first month of operation after giving crap stability. (or worse, on initial startup with a pretty puff of blue smoke)

My 300w FSP-300-60ATV only spits out 15A @ 12V, but that seems to be plenty enough for my PAL XP2100+
