OK, I want to get a silent PSU, but I don't want to spend $250 for a passive-cooled 350W. I looked around and found a couple good candidates and I'm curious if any of you have an opinion one way or the other.

Vantec ION 400
400W
20-30db(A)
Fan speed settings: Low, Medium, Auto (fans are temp controlled)
Output AC

Silentmaxx ProSilence 420
420W
19-??db(A) (I couldn't find an acoustic upper limit)
No fan speed settings (fans are always temp controlled)
No output AC
Verax/Papst fans

I'm leaning toward the Vantec, but does anyone know what kind of fans it has? I would like to replace them with Verax/Papst if it doesn't already have them.

Thanks

Fortron has a 350W power supply (good for around 420W peak), that has a 120mm multi-speed smart fan, and it's only $36 at Newegg.

Best way to passively cool your own:

Get a bunch of coke cans and some JB weld. Remove your PSU, Cut the cans in half and JB Weld them to the sides of your PSU. Make sure to NOT put the open end down...but the non open end. Make sure you drink or empty the coke cans before cutting them in half. Let the JB Weld harden and reinstall the PSU. Then go and get some nacho's and beer. Get wasted, eat the nachos, and party with a bunch of friends. If you don't have any...ask your mom or dad to have theirs come over and party with them. Boy am I retarded or what?

I can't tell you the specs, but can vouch for the quietness of the Antec True Power 550. At least in my system, the fans spin slowly enough to not be heard above other fans I have.

Well, if I was a Fortron salesman I'd be talking people into the larger units, which are FAR more expensive.
