I stumbled across a couple of great products and thought this would make a GREAT article for Tom's Hardware Guide.
I started exploring ideas for putting a PC in my car. I found VIA's M10000 (Nehemiah) Motherboard, which is a mini-ITX form factor (17cm by 17cm) and low power consumption. This unit makes for a great mobo for auto and home entertainment applications.
Also, I came across a little know manufacturer of specialty power supplies. Opus Solutions, Inc. (www.opussolutions.com). They make power supplies specifically for auto/PC applications. This is no small wonder when you consider what would happen to a PC if you connected it directly to the 12 volt DC of you car, then started your car or turned it off. The power supply even comes with ATX power management control and will shut down your PC when you turn off the car. There are even timer options to give your PC a chance to save everything. The power supply can be set to tell your PC to shut down, hibernate, or go to sleep. And the PS is smart enough to not allow the PC to drain down your car battery. All in all, it's an amazing little item that allows us PC enthusiasts to get silly putting PC's in our cars.
Call me crazy, but for the price of your average store bought PC, you can put a PC in your car that will do music, movies, games, navigation, wireless ethernet or internet, etc. The question is: why wouldn't you want one?
Would Tom's Hardware Guide put together a review of some of the great possibilities of car PC's and the hardware that enables them? Please?!?
could make a pretty sweet mp3 player. paired with a usb port in the front and a usb mem stick it has endless possibilities. get a small monitor and you got a fully functioning pc in your car. mmmmm, thats tempting.
The problem is, the stuff you're talking about is junk. Get a laptop.
Tom's tested the Epia and put it in the best light possible, but in the end it's still junk.
So why not just pull the screen off a laptop and move it wherever you like?
