I am bringing 4 used computers to a school in Nicaragua, Central America. How do I network the 4 together and have internet capablitities on all 4 units. They have 98 se installed and NIC cards. There is no DSL or cable there, only a phone line with an RJ-11 hookup w/internet access. I have been reading and studying everything I can find on the subject, but still too many unanswered questions. What I really need is a list or diagram showing just what I need to connect these 4 computers and have internet access on all 4. Any and all help will be accepted with many thanks before hand.
you need a modem and a nic in one computer. set up internet connection sharing on that machine. hook all the computers up to a hub and configure them to use the computer with the modem.

This I understand so far. Can you please tell me what kind, brand, model and so forth of the "hub" you are talking about. It seems to me that the word "hub" is used for just about everything. I've seen the word used so genericly when talking about a network set up, especaily when looking at manufacutures pages on the web. I guess that they assume that the product they make and market is the one and only. I am new to this game and find it to make my head hurt when looking at all of it.
a hub is still a hub no matter who makes it. there is very little noticable difference between brands. to connect computers together the two most common devices are either a hub or a switch. a hub is cheaper than a switch. a hub is just a repeater. one computer tries to talk to another computer so it sends out information through its own nic, it travels through the wire into a hub. the hub doesnt care where the info is going so it spits it out every port it has. it will go to every computer but if its only addressed to one computer, every other computer will ignore it. this creates a lot of chatter on the network. a switch will only send the info to the port it is destined for. for 4 computers sharing a phone line a hub is just fine.

O.K. so far, I have a Belkin Part Number: F5D5130-5. The Belkin is a 5-Port Network Switch (10/100Mbps). I do not know if this if this unit has a RJ-11 hook up or not. But it is my understanding that if one of the computers has a phone modem installed I can hook up to this directly and the I would then hook up the RJ-45 cable to the NIC card on this computer and that cable to the Hub which is also connected the other computers, thus completing the network. Is this correct?
The PC with the modem will have to be able to run ICS (Internet Connection Sharing). I'm not sure what version of 98 has that. I think it's 98SE but I could be wrong. Anyone want to confirm that?
It's always the one thing you never suspected.
My thanks to you folks that have helped me. All equipment is being packed up for shipment to Nicaragua as I type. Once there and have unpacked and connected the equipment I'm sure that I will be back on this discussion group asking for more help.
Muchas Gracias
