I have a HP Pavilion 8480Z and im runnig Win2k on it, and I have a few other computers with Win2k on them, all networked. I also have a cable modem hooked up to one of the computers, which is routing internet to the others.

Whenever I install or copy anything bigger than a few KB off of one of the computers to the 8480Z, it loses its network connection, of course stops copying, the computer starts going slow, and the only way to fix it is to reboot, but then it will do it all over again when i try to copy. But if i initiate the copy from one of the other computers it'll work fine. Also after a little while surfing the internet (through the routing computer) it'll do the same thing, loses its connection, starts going slow, and have to reboot.

I've tried reinstalling drivers, i've tried different network cards, and ive tried reinstalling Win2k but nothing has fixed it.

It came with Win98 and had no major problems under that.

It seems to me like it might be a BIOS problem, but i cant access the HP site, and i cant seem to find the BIOS updates anywhere else.

Plz Help!

I cant imagine it being a bios problem, srevice packs up to date? you say you tried different cards, did you check the cards settings ? sometimes they need changing from "auto", also did you try another cable, and also different ports on the hub/switch?

Yeah the service packs are up to date, and im using the same cards with the default settings in my other systems with no problems, and i tried different ports on my switch. I didnt try a different cable cuz i didnt see how that could cause somthing like this. Ive had problems with cables before but the symtoms weren't like this. It never fails, im sitting at the 8480Z and i start a copy or i install something from one of the other computers and it loses its network connection, but if im at one of the other computers and i copy the same file off of that computer to the 8480Z, itll do it fine. I also have a HP Pavlion 4535, which took Win2k just fine, and everything in it is the same as the 8480Z, except the motherboard. And the 8480Z's motherboard has known hardware defects (btw, HP doesn't support the 8480Z anymore) and i thought this might just be another defect, either in the hardware or the BIOS. Im probably just going to buy another mobo.

hmm

I wasnt aware that that particular pc had known problems, I really dont know what to suggest, but if there is a bios flash that may fix this, maybe if you post in one of the other forums a request for the flash, someone may have it, I normally keep everything I download lol, Im sure Im not the only one.
