Hello - I am running XPhomeSP2; NTBACKUP runs every night, with Volume
shadow copy so open files can be backed up. the file system is fat32,
but VSC requires an NTFS partition. this method has been working
perfectly for a couple years.

I recently discovered by casual examination of the event viewer that
VSS has not been working since Jan 14.
doing some research on google, I found the following site
http://tinyurl.com/6br9z , which mentions a possible corruption of the
eventlog keys in HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog,
after installation of an antivirus program (not NAV).

so I scanned back to find what was the last thiing I installed before Jan 14,
and lo and behold, NAV2005 was installed on the 13th.
so I emailed symantec tech support, and was provided with a detailed
procedure to manually uninstall NAV2005, as well as remove any
lingering registry entries for systemworks 2001 and 2002 which I had
had before NAV2005.
I followed this procedure, checked in Windows installer cleanup for
hanging bits, found none. also checked with regseeker for leftover
norton, symantec, and antivirus registry entries, and deleted them
all. no other symantec products on the system.

then as per tech support recommendation, I did a 'clean boot' (using
msconfig), and re-installed NAV 2005. this was successful.

after ALL this, the VSS failure is still occurring. here are the two
messages I receive every time a backup runs:

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Shadow Copy writer
ContentIndexingService called routine RegQueryValueExW which failed
with status 0x80070002 (converted to 0x800423f4).

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: An internal inconsistency was
detected in trying to contact shadow copy service writers. Please
check to see that the Event Service and Volume Shadow Copy Service are
operating properly.

the backup works, but the logs list a bunch of files that it can't
backup because they are open. I have tried a 'workaround' of closing
all *my* open files, but there are still lots of system controlled
files in documents and settings that fail.

I have been unable to find an answer to this problem, and would
appreciate getting if FIXED!!

thanks in advance,

Vern
